Une premiere serie de textes, regroupes sous le theme « Ideologies linguistiques et discours d’autorite dans les communautes francophones d’ici », est consacree a des discours sur la langue qui ont marque l’imaginaire linguistique des Quebecois et des Acadiens, comme ceux tenus par le clerge ou encore par les chroniqueurs de langue. Les articles ranges sous le deuxieme theme, « Description des multiples normes et usages des francais d’ici », mettent en evidence le besoin d’explicitation de la norme qui oriente les pratiques des francophones d’ici ainsi que l’important effort de description qui continue a animer les linguistes s’interessant a ces pratiques. Les articles repondent ainsi a des questions aussi variees que complementaires : « Quelles sont les conditions favorables a l’adoption de reformes en matiere de langue ? », « Quelles conceptions de la langue sous-tendent les discours sur le francais tel qu’il est parle chez nous ? », « Comment aborder la question delicate des emprunts a l’anglais dans les ouvrages de reference destines aux francophones quebecois ? », ou encore « Quels sont les traits linguistiques qui caracterisent les communautes francophones d’ici ? ».
