Abstract
Este trabajo argumenta que muchos de los retos enfrentados actualmente por las democracias latinoamericanas y las implicaciones a largo plazo de esos retos para la estabilidad democrática en la región, pueden ser entendidos en términos de su impacto en la esfera pública. La primera sección desarrolla un marco teórico para entender la esfera pública como el nexo entre la sociedad civil y el Estado. La segunda sección examina la naturaleza de la esfera pública en América Latina y las formas en que amplios segmentos de la población son marginados de hecho en cuanto a su participación activa en ella. Más específicamente, la estrechez de la esfera pública se discute en términos de dos dimensiones interrelacionadas: la forma dominante de intermediación del interés, lo que he dado en llamar neopluralismo y la creciente brecha entre la población en general y la elite política. La sección concluye con un estudio del caso chileno posterior al regreso del gobierno democrático en 1990. La sección final brevemente habla de la necesidad de llenar el creciente vacío público en América Latina y algunos posibles pasos a seguir.
