Abstract
En este trabajo se examina el comercio exterior de Estados Unidos y su relacion con sus principales socios comerciales, enfocandose esencialmente a la industria manufacturera. Con este objetivo se construye el indice de ventajas comparativas reveladas con la finalidad de identificar los paises que poseen mayores ventajas sobre ese mercado y se comparan con el caso de Mexico, durante el periodo 1990 – 2004. Los resultados de la investigacion senalan que China ha venido aumentando el comercio con Estados Unidos de tal manera que actualmente es su principal proveedor de manufacturas, superando a Japon, Mexico y Canada. El indice de ventajas comparativas indica que Mexico aumento su especializacion en Estados Unidos, pero no gano ventajas comparativas reveladas ya que aumento de 0.33 en 1990 a 0.71 en el 2004. En el ano 2001 obtuvo ventajas comparativas de 1.05, pero la recesion economica de Estados Unidos ocasiono la reduccion de este en los siguientes anos. La elevada dependencia economica y politica del comercio exterior de Mexico con la economia de Estados Unidos ha frenado el crecimiento de las exportaciones totales y manufactureras mexicanas.
