La pratique du terrain ethnologique de Carmen Roy en Saskatchewan à la fin des années soixante reste méconnue. Elle n’en reste pas moins unique dans les annales de l’ethnologie au Canada français et pose concrètement sur le terrain les limites d’une discipline dont les fondements renvoient à l’idéologie de la survivance française en Amérique du Nord et à « l’école de [la] tradition véridique ». L’expérience de Carmen Roy est d’autant plus intéressante qu’elle relève d’un échec tenu secret et que l’ethnologue se trouve dans l’incapacité de l’expliquer. Dans le cadre de cet article, nous proposerons de discuter et de situer cet échec dans le contexte du développement de l’ethnologie au Québec et au Canada français.
