Abstract
A l’ete 1914, le Canada se mobilise aux cotes des Britanniques, envoyant en Europe les premieres troupes qui formeront le corps expeditionnaire canadien. Des avril 1915, la 1re division d’infanterie subit des pertes considerables a Ypres, au combat de Saint-Julien. L’annee suivante, quatre divisions sont presentes dans les tranchees de la Somme. Les Canadiens se forgent alors une reputation de troupes de choc, notamment a la bataille de Vimy au printemps 1917, devenue un symbole. Ils combattent dans la boue de Passchendaele en Belgique, avant de se retrouver en premiere ligne des offensives britanniques de 1918 durant la campagne des Cent Jours. Au total, pres de 650 000 Canadiens participent a la Grande Guerre, une implication qui, depassant le cadre militaire, contribue a l’emergence de leur pays sur la scene mondiale.
