Abstract
Lors de la période révolutionnaire et napoléonienne, l’Italie fut le théâtre de combats entre divers ennemis. Pour les gouvernements des anciens États et pour les anciennes dynasties, ainsi que pour l’Église, la France fut le plus affreux et redoutable des ennemis, dépeinte comme un monstre d’impiété, contre lequel la propagande ecclésiastique relança le langage de la guerre sainte et l’esprit de croisade. Les patriotes italiens, au contraire, présentaient les Français comme des libérateurs qui venaient faire la guerre aux tyrans mais non pas aux peuples, conduisant une croisade de la liberté. Dans leurs discours les ennemis n’étaient pas les Français ni les seules puissances coalisées, de l’Angleterre à l’Autriche et à la Russie, mais plutôt les aristocrates et tous ceux qui s’opposaient aux principes révolutionnaires. Le terme « ennemi » assumait ainsi une signification non seulement militaire mais éminemment idéologique, visant à délégitimer l’adversaire politique.
