Abstract
Plus qu’une cinéaste, Maya Deren était une artiste anthropologue avant-gardiste, une féministe avant la lettre. C’était aussi une théoricienne poète, dont les écrits sont encore aujourd’hui méconnus. Au coeur de son projet artistique qui l’a menée jusqu’en Haïti, la dépersonnalisation, à la base de toute pratique rituelle. Cette quête métaphysique passe tant par la production de ses quatre premiers films que par la création, sur le plan conceptuel, de la forme ritualiste, spécifique au cinéma. De la pratique découle la théorie : Une anagramme d’idées sur l’art, la forme et le cinéma, exemple révélateur de ce système unique de pensée comme de création, qui s’apparente à la structure du rhizome deleuzo-guattarien. Figure mythique et surréaliste de l’avant-garde américaine des années 1940, Maya Deren s’est très vite vue confrontée aux limites de la représentation cinématographique, alors qu’elle se trouvait à mi-chemin entre l’artiste et l’ethnologue, comme placée entre le rêve et la réalité.
