Abstract
A dor é um fenômeno multidimensional com componentes sensitivos, emocionais e cognitivos. Os aspectos psicológicos têm um papel de destaque no início, agravamento e manutenção da dor. A dor é descrita como algo desagradável, independente da sua duração (aguda, crônica, episódica) ou origem (provocada por nocicepção, desaferentação, mista ou psicogênica). Sua intensidade, freqüência geram desconfortos físicos e psicológicos que dificultam o desenvolvimento das atividades cotidianas. O relato verbal (oral ou escrito) é uma forma de tornar público dados que ajudam a diagnosticar e planejar estratégias de prevenção e tratamento. O Questionário de McGill ilustra a importância do relato verbal na avaliação da dor descrevendo aspectos quantitativos e qualitativos de sua percepção. O objetivo desse artigo é discutir a importância do relato verbal na avaliação psicológica da dor.
