Abstract
Ce texte présente une tentative de périodisation des quarante dernières années de recherche en sociologie de l'éducation, quarante années au cours desquelles on a vu la sociologie de l'éducation au gré de la conjoncture historique et politique s'institutionnaliser dans le cadre d'une vision fonctionnaliste et économiste de l'école, se radicaliser en développant un regard critique sur ¡es rapports École et Société et finalement opérer un déplacement vers une approche plus interne, plus axée sur le sujet et les savoirs véhiculés à l'intérieur des systèmes d'enseignement. En mettant en relief les textes majeurs qui fondent Sociologie de l'Éducation, au moins dans trois espaces géographiques, les USA, la France, la Grande-Bretagne, cet article rend compte des écoles de pensée, des moments de tension qui marquent non seulement la sociologie de l'éducation mais aussi les conjonctures théoriques du champ de la sociologie en général. En bout de piste, les auteurs n'hésitent pas à constater l'éclatement des paradigmes jusqu'ici dominants et à poser des interrogations indiquant dans quel sens sont susceptibles de s'orienter les recherches et pratiques à venir.
