L'auteur utilise des données sociométriques sur des étudiants du secondaire pour montrer que l'on ne peut étudier adéquatement les relations sociales d'un groupe au moyen de modèles par catégories, et qu'il faut au contraire utiliser des modèles de réseaux sociaux. Prenant comme exemple la notion d'inégalité sociale, il montre que les distributions de popularité sont trompeuses, et qu'il faut, pour définir une réelle hiérarchie des relations sociales, considérer en détails comment ces dernières s'enclenchent les unes dans les autres et forment des chaînes. Il montre enfin comment de telles chaînes rendent partiellement compte de la perception que les individus ont de la stratification au sein de leur propre système social.
