La especie Neisseria gonorrhoeae es el agente causal de la gonorrea, padecimiento que afecta anualmente a 78 millones de personas, cifra que lo coloca ----de acuerdo con su frecuencia---- como la segunda enfermedad de transmisión sexual entre las de origen bacteriano.1 Por ejemplo, las clínicas especializadas reportan índices anuales de 327 casos de gonorrea/ 100,000 varones y de 229 casos/100,000 mujeres y, durante toda la década pasada, ocurrieron numerosos casos de transmisión endémica en Londres, Cleveland, Seattle, Sydney y Ontario, así como diversas epidemias en Grecia2 y en los países del sureste asiático (Carrol, 1998; Bhuiyan, 1999; Mavroidi, 2000; Thompson, 1999).
