Face aux nouvelles dynamiques de communication du Web social, les relations publiques seraient appelées à se transformer et à adopter des modèles de pratique plus ouverts et plus éthiques, sur le mode du dialogue et d’échanges plus symétriques. Une revue de travaux faisant l’état des lieux met toutefois en relief une tension entre l’importance accordée à ces modèles, d’une part, et la logique stratégique qui se déploie en ligne, d’autre part. Une exploration théorique nous permet d’éclairer ce nœud de tensions constitutif des relations publiques à la lumière de l’éthique de la persuasion au cœur de l’héritage rhétorique. Les approches inspirées des « nouvelles rhétoriques » sont ensuite mobilisées pour adopter un autre point de vue sur ces enjeux éthiques. Il s’agit ainsi de s’intéresser aux enjeux sociaux liés aux normes de communication qui s’établissent en ligne et contribuent à la formation de modèles de « bonne communication » qui sont structurants pour nos sociétés.
