Le recours à l’avortement provoqué à Lomé (Togo). Évolution et rôle dans la réduction de la fécondité En dépit d’une modification récente de la loi sur l’avortement au Togo, cette dernière demeure restrictive et l’avortement provoqué s’y pratique essentiellement de façon illégale. En combinant une méthode indirecte (résiduelle) et une méthode directe, cette étude estime l’évolution du recours à l’avortement à Lomé, la capitale togolaise. Elle s’intéresse aussi aux changements intervenus dans le calendrier et la fréquence du recours à l’avortement selon les générations. Elle détermine enfin le rôle relatif de l’avortement dans la baisse de la fécondité à Lomé. L’article utilise les données des Enquêtes démographiques et de santé de 1988 et de 1998, et celles de l’Enquête sur la planification familiale et l’avortement provoqué de 2002. Les résultats suggèrent que le recours à l’avortement est en hausse dans la capitale togolaise. Le nombre d’avortements y est particulièrement important parmi les jeunes générations, qui montrent un risque plus élevé de recourir à un avortement que leurs aînées aux mêmes âges. Une partie de la régulation des naissances serait ainsi assurée par l’avortement, qui est principalement employé en début de vie féconde et entraîne une réduction d’au moins 10,8 % de la fécondité potentielle.
