Résumé Dans un contexte muséal centré sur la beauté de l’objet et la mise en valeur d’une culture canadienne française, seul le patrimoine amérindien assimilable à l’univers religieux ou artistique français des xvii e et xviii e siècles pourra être valorisé. Même si, au début du xx e siècle, les folkloristes s’ouvrent à la connaissance ethnographique, leurs recherches abordent essentiellement la tradition populaire canadienne française et lorsque l’altérité amérindienne est nommée, elle est assimilée au sein du « nous ». La reconnaissance d’une collection amérindienne constituée au musée du Séminaire et au musée de la Province aboutira cependant en 1983 à la création du musée de la Civilisation et à la séparation nette des collections d’art et d’ethnographie.
