Abstract
Parmi les contraintes biologiques liées à la reproduction, l’allaitement occupe une place à part, en ce qu’il peut être évité, éludé. Mieux que la grossesse et l’accouchement, il exprime la liberté, donc la dimension proprement humaine de la maternité ; il accuse le seuil entre nature et culture. Il ne dépend pas seulement du désir de la mère : celle-ci est soumise à des normes qui varient selon les lieux, les milieux, les moments. L’allaitement maternel, fonction féminine réputée naturelle, se révèle aussi comme un remarquable analyseur des liens sociaux : rapports de sexe entre le père et la mère, rapports de classe entre la mère et la nourrice, rapports de savoirs entre la mère et le médecin.
