Abstract
Dans Jean et Jeannette ou Le petit chien de la marquise, petits pastiches de romans du XVIIIe siècle, Gautier s’empare de sujets frivoles pour restituer une époque qu’il imagine essentiellement festive. Imprégné de ses lectures, il crée un univers ludique et joue avec le langage du passé. Ces récits sans prétention relèvent pourtant d’une esthétique de la désinvolture et de l’excentricité chère à Gautier : le joli, qui n’est qu’agrément de décor, plus libre et plus vivant que le beau, satisfait le goût de l’auteur pour un art gratuit, libre, pour une littérature qui vise avant tout à distraire et à charmer le lecteur.
