Abstract
La situaci?n de la escritora en el modernismo hispanoamericano no ha sido investigada. Algunos cr?ticos, aun muy recientes, han dicho tajantemente que no hay mujeres modernistas. Nieves Xenes (Cuba, 1859-1915) es una de las escritoras que, dentro de la ambig?edad gen?rica que caracteriza el modernismo, busca formas para expresar su inserci?n en la modernidad. Usa la voz po?tica para apropiarse de y as? subvertir el discurso modernista en t?rminos femeninos. A trav?s de un estudio de las estrategias discursivas en la obra de Xenes, este art?culo intenta comenzar la problematizaci?n del modernismo en t?rminos de g?nero, con el fin de extender los l?mites del movimiento incorporando al mismo la obra de ciertas escritoras modernistas cuyo car?cter en cuanto tal hasta ahora no ha sido reconocido.
