Paddling the Nation: Canadian Becoming and Becoming Canadian in and through the Canoe

Abstract
In this essay, I consider how the nation might be evoked via reiterations of the canoe and contemplate why this boat might be a compelling means of attachment to the Canadian nation. Through reading canoe artifacts as they emerge in a variety of cultural spaces, I explore how the boat is usually read as a benign or simple symbol, but how its symbolism can be more complex and can be reappropriated. The canoe often calls up a version of Canada that predominantly reflects the desires of a dominant, settler/invader society and thus calls up a Canada that may exclude Aboriginal and broader immigrant communities and histories. In the end, the canoe and the practice of canoeing perhaps confer national belonging, yet they are contradictory in the ways that they do so.
