Abstract
Coherent optical modems have fast become the dominant line-side transport solution in the telecommunications industry. Here we provide a user's view of the critical role played by optical components and analog electronics in the ongoing transition to ubiquitous coherent optical communications. How did they help us get to where we are today? How will they influence where we go in the future?
