La mort d’un être cher suscite une des douleurs les plus vives et une des émotions les plus intenses que peut subir un individu, qu’il soit héros, déesse ou simple mortel. Cet article présente les descriptions littéraires mésopotamiennes de réactions pouvant être qualifiées d’individuelles ou spontanées devant le cadavre de l’être aimé ou à l’annonce de sa mort. Trois dossiers seront ainsi abordés : la mort de Dumuzi/Tammuz amant d’Inana/Ištar et pleuré par sa sœur Gestinanna, la mort d’Enkidu ami de Gilgameš et enfin l’affliction de la déesse Nintu/Mami au cours du Déluge babylonien lorsqu’elle assiste, impuissante, à la destruction de l’humanité qu’elle a créée.
