Abstract
The last quarter of the nineteenth century was a crucial period for the history of relations between the Canary Islands and the American continent. Cochineal crisis and the lack of alternatives threw to emigration to thousand of islanders. Furthermore, Cuban War caused that many of them had to go to fight and die in the battle front. This article discusses the importance of these events in a region as important as affected by it as the North of Tenerife and such as the conservative press in the area make a discourse about it. Although contact with America was not limited to the exchange of people, but there were too trade, cultural or ideas exchanges.
