This paper presents an overview of the literature on aspects of the electoral process that prevent women from being elected to public office in greater numbers.It focuses on Canada, discussing the barriers that women encounter during the candidate recruitment and selection processes, particularly those related to political parties and constituency-level executives.RESUME Cet article presente un apercu de la litterature sur les aspects du processus electoral qui empeche les femmes d'etre elues en plus grand nombre.II se concentre sur le Canada, discute des barrieres que les femmes rencontrent lors du recrutement des candidats et du processus de selection, particulierement ceux relies aux partis politiques et aux cadres au niveau de la circonscription.
