Abstract

Nuclear reactor of the CANDU nuclear power plant is composed of hundreds pressure tubes, which are pressure boundary of primary reactor coolant and connected to endfittings at each ends by rolled joint. The pressure tube material, Zr-2.5Nb alloy is known as susceptible material for Delayed Hydride Cracking(DRC), which is affected by hydrogen (and deutrium) concentration on the material and stress concentration by nominal stress and any kind of flaw that can be made during manufacturing or operating process. According to the Canadian experience for CANDU operation, the rolled joint region is one of most susceptible region for DRC because of higher hydrogen concentration and higher residual stress compared with the main body region of pressure tube. In this study, surface residual stress distributions in pressure tube rolled joint region are analyzed for several rolling variables using Finite Element (FE) method. Additionally, effects of residual stress on DRC initiation are evaluated.
