Les évolutions du couvert végétal sahélien diffèrent entre la résilience sur les sols sableux et la dégradation sur les glacis rocheux, dans un contexte d’expansion des superficies cultivées. Les ressources fourragères ne déclinent pas tant en production qu’en qualité et sont moins accessibles au bétail. Malgré l’ampleur des pertes au cours des sécheresses, les effectifs du cheptel progressent et contribuent à renforcer la charge animale sur les parcours. Son impact sur l’agro-écosystème reste modéré tant que l’élevage est pastoral et mobile. En revanche, les performances reproductrices des troupeaux sont affectées par la perte de mobilité non compensée par des intrants alimentaires. L’élevage pastoral naisseur, qui ravitaille les élevages d’opportunité en jeunes animaux, doit maintenir et sécuriser la mobilité du bétail, qui lui permet d’optimiser l’offre fourragère, en réduisant les effets dommageables de la pâture.
