Dans la première moitié du XX e siècle, les anthropologues, nommément Gilberto Freyre, ont forgé des outils interprétatifs cohérents du Brésil. Depuis les années 1970, les revendications concernant les identités culturelles, l’histoire et aussi la politique ont changé les rapports sociaux. Et face à la demande croissante d’inclusion, provenant de groupes subalternes comme les afro-descendants et les indigènes, le modèle interprétatif dominant, basé sur la fusion des trois races et l’homogénéité culturelle, a perdu une grande part de validité. En porte à faux par rapport à la notion de justice sociale et contraire aux politiques d’action affirmative, le courant dominant de l’anthropologie brésilienne témoigne une pensée conservatrice qui réclame un effort pour remodeler sa vision théorique relative à la dynamique identitaire et aux relations raciales.
