Abstract
Thomas Urbain, jeune métis traversé par une crise d’identité et gagné au saint-simonisme, débarque en Égypte en 1832 pour participer à l’union de l’Orient et de l’Occident. Très vite attiré par l’islam, le jeune homme tombe amoureux tour à tour d’une femme noire originaire d’Abyssinie et de sa fille métisse. Les ayant perdues toutes les deux, il se convertit alors à l’islam sous les auspices du saint-simonisme. Revenu en France pour une courte période, il se fait nommer en Algérie comme traducteur rattaché à l’Armée et continue de défendre l’idée d’une union entre l’Orient et l’Occident. Il encourage en particulier les mariages mixtes et montre lui-même l’exemple en épousant une Algérienne musulmane avec qui il aura une fille. Il va pourtant d’échec en échec, tant dans sa vie privée que publique, et doit fuir l’Algérie à la fin du Second Empire pour échapper à la vindicte des colons.
