Los cambios actuales en la educacion latinoamericana no pueden estudiarse sin considerar los cambios politicos y economicos generales en la region, a su vez inscritos en la dinamica de la globalizacion. Despues del declive de los modelos socialistas del Estado de bienestar social, los gobiernos neoliberales dominan en muchas partes del mundo. En la mayoria de los paises, los cambios en los acuerdos financieros, aunados a mecanismos de rentabilidad, han obligado a las universidades a reconsiderar su mision social, sus prioridades academicas y sus estructuras organizativas. Este articulo describe el contexto en el que se dan los cambios en la universidad, centrandose en aspectos relacionados con la globalizacion y el neoliberalismo; asimismo, examina las caracteristicas principales de las reestructuraciones universitarias desde una perspectiva comparatista, con especial enfasis en el caso de America Latina
