En la metodologia aplicada para determinar que paises pueden considerarse grandes potencias, se atiende a cuatro criterios absolutos (PIB, poderio militar, poblacion y ex-tension geografica) independientes entre si; lo que permite construir un indice (IG4) que mide la situacion de los diferentes paises dentro de la globalidad; resultando seis en posicion destacada, que integran el exclusivo club de las grandes potencias: EEUU, China, India, Rusia, Brasil y Japon. Entre los primeros no figura, pues, ninguna nacion europea; sin que ello sea obice para tener en cuenta la Union Europea como conjunto altamente significativo. Se cierra la categorizacion previendo los paises que llamaran a la puerta del club de superpoderes (Arabia Saudi, Egipto, Indonesia, Mexico, Sudafrica, Canada y Australia).
