Abstract
Guyana is going through a period of intensified social, economic and political conflict which has left many of its citizens with feelings of hopelessness and despair. At the economic level, economic growth, which was visibly in evidence following the change of regime in 1992, has come to a near halt in 2002. At the social level, stress is reflected in the deep concerns and anxieties about unofficial and official crime, especially in Georgetown and certain East coast villages. Some have concluded that the Guyana state has collapsed or failed. Others, more optimistically and charitably, say it is close to having collapsed.
