A similarity transformation that reduces the number of multipliers in a given realization is presented. The transformation is orthogonal and thus preserves <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">\parallel A \parallel</tex> . This guarantees that overflow stability is not sacrificed for fewer nonzero coefficients. It is shown that this transformation does not affect the sensitivity of the transfer function to variations in its coefficients. An example of a general 1-Q second order filter is given.
