Loin d’être un débat d’ordre sémantique, le concept de dépendance est un enjeu psychosocial fondamental dans la mesure où la conception et la définition d’une condition ont un impact direct sur la compréhension du phénomène ainsi que sur les types de services et de traitements à privilégier. À partir d’une synthèse des écrits scientifiques, et comme cadre théorique, nous proposons dans un premier temps de mettre en lumière le processus de médicalisation comme modalité de contrôle social en contexte de dépendance. Dans un deuxième temps, nous illustrerons comment la perspective psychosociale, telle que mise en oeuvre dans les travaux de Peele, constitue une richesse qui nous permet de mieux comprendre une variété impressionnante d’activités humaines liées aux dépendances : cyberdépendance, jeux de hasard et d’argent, psychotropes, etc. Dans un troisième temps, et à partir de la grille de Peele, nous tenterons de démontrer comment ses travaux contribuent à créer des conditions plus propices à la dépathologisation et au développement du pouvoir d’agir des personnes en misant sur les forces plutôt que sur les carences. En guise de conclusion, nous explorerons des pistes de rapprochement entre le discours médical et le discours social.
