Abstract
The Olympic opening ceremonies in modern societies are among the most important global media ritual in which national identities are constructed and celebrated. In this study, the different ways of constructing national identities employed in the Olympic opening ceremonies of the Nagano(1998), Sydney(2000), Beijing(2008), and Vancouver(2010) Olympics were identified and compared. This study closely examined the visual text of cultural performances in the Olympic opening ceremonies, with focus on the narratives of the ‘nation,’ visual images, and other representational devices relating to national identities. The findings show that the national identities that were shown in the aforementioned Olympic opening ceremonies differ in terms of the emphasis on globalism vs. nationalism, collectivism vs. individualism, diversity ingender and ethnicity. It is also found that the discourse of the nation is constructed by merging the universalism of the Olympics with particular national values and nationalist cause. Finally, this paper discusses the implication of the ‘adjusted’ national identities in the changing global context.
