Abstract
L’Exposition universelle de Montréal, en 1967, célébrait le centenaire de la Confédération canadienne, et le gouvernement fédéral s’employa à y souligner l’unité canadienne. Pourtant, à l’occasion d’Expo 67, se produisit un rebondissement inattendu du processus identitaire québécois : dans ce cadre où chaque pavillon, chaque objet matériel ou symbolique est désigné à l’admiration, les visiteurs québécois s’approprient la nouvelle réalité « remarquable » à laquelle ils assistent. Par ce que l’on peut appeler une « catharsis identitaire », ils adhèrent – affectivement, pacifiquement et avec enthousiasme – à cette réalité, celle d’un Québec moderne qui est « quelqu’un ». Le message d’Expo 67 est donc dévoyé au profit de l’avènement d’une nouvelle communauté de référence.
