Vaste entreprise de critique des sciences de l'homme, l'ouvrage de Femand Dumont, l'Anthropologie en l'absence de l'homme, substitue à une épistomologie traditionnelle, celle de la recherche des fondements de l'activité scientifique et de la définition des critères de vérité, une épistémologie de la pertinence, qui resitue la science dans la culture : produit d'une culture, la science qui tente d'expliquer ou d'interpréter la culture est aussi une production de culture. D'où une double relation problématique : la relation de l'observateur à son objet et aussi la relation de l'observateur avec sa société ou sa culture, et donc avec les diverses pratiques sociales et les diverses croyances et représentations culturelles. Mais une telle épistémologie qui introduit une perspective sociologique, doit-elle seulement s'envelopper d'une interrogation sur l'existence? Ou doit-elle plutôt s'articuler à une sociologie des intellectuels et, plus largement, à une sociologie du pouvoir (symbolique)? D'abord préoccupés de bien comprendre la pensée de l'auteur, d'expliciter les caractéristiques de sa démarche et de dégager ses principales contributions, les commentaires de Nicole Gagnon, de Claude Savary et de Roberto Miguelez soulèvent diverses questions qui permettent de poursuivre et d'enrichir le débat ouvert par Dumont.
