La cr?tica se empe?a en afirmar que El perro del hortelano, como tantas otras comedias de Lope de Vega, trata del tema del amor y el honor. Tal lectura es quiz?s hoy irrelevante. Las notas que siguen sugieren que si la obra de Lope tiene alg?n inter?s para el presente, m?s all? de constituir un simple art?culo de consumo, esc?nico o cinematogr?fico, hay que descubrir en la estructura teatral que conforma su f?bula la forma de existencia individual y social que la produce. En otras palabras: hay que historizar la obra. El an?lisis encuentra que el amor y el honor son los ingredientes de la f?bula, pero que los de la trama, que determinan la invenci?n de aqu?llos, son el poder y el dinero de una clase social que aunque todav?a manifiesta una visi?n aristocr?tica de la existencia vive ya seg?n los impulsos materiales de lo que ser? la sociedad burguesa, de cuyas autorrepresentaciones El perro del hortelano es ya un preludio.
