La cr?tica se empe?a en afirmar que El perro del hortelano, como tantas otras comedias de Lope de Vega, trata del tema del amor y el honor. Tal lectura es quiz?s hoy irrelevante. Las notas que siguen sugieren que si la obra de Lope tiene alg?n inter?s para el presente, m?s all? de constituir un simple art?culo de consumo, esc?nico o cinematogr?fico, hay que descubrir en la estructura teatral que conforma su f?bula la forma de existencia individual y social que la produce. En otras palabras: hay que historizar la obra.
