Abstract
Despite the active research on Korean ‘multiculture’ since the mid-2000s, there has been confusion about the concept of ‘multiculture’ among researchers in Korea. Korean society has especially suffered great misunderstanding and confusion about the concept of multiculture as it originally derived from the West. By comparing Korea with Canada, a country that is considered having an ideal model of multiculture, this paper aims to reveal differences and characteristics of the concepts of multiculture, which are adopted in both countries. Through the analysis of the specificities of the social, historical contexts in which the concepts are used, it tries to contextualize the Korean multicultural situation. This paper argues that while there are not only multicultural situations but also multiculturalism and multicultural policies officially promoted by the government in Canada, there are no multicultural situation nor multiculturalism in Korea as are appearing in Canada. And, it also finds that while multicultural policies have been recently adopted by the Korean government, they should be understood in far different contexts from those of Canada.
