Avec la rédaction de l’ Ovide moralisé en vers, la première moitié du xiv e siècle marque l’avènement des traductions intégrales des Métamorphoses d’Ovide. Le succès du long poème est tel que, jusqu’à la Renaissance, les versions en prose et les remaniements en vers se succéderont régulièrement. Parue en 1484 à Bruges sous la presse de l’imprimeur Colard Mansion, la Bible des poëtes est la première version imprimée des témoins de cette tradition. L’ouvrage hérite de ses prédécesseurs un goût prononcé pour les moralisations qui, au gré des commentaires, traductions et traités mythographiques, n’ont cessé de travailler la matière fabuleuse ovidienne pour l’adapter aux exigences du monde chrétien. L’examen du sort particulier réservé au traitement du mythe de Phaéthon offre l’occasion d’appréhender les dispositifs rhétoriques et les méthodes exégétiques mis en oeuvre dans les quinze livres du texte ovidien.
