II y a deux façons d'appréhender l'influence que les variables d'origine familiale exercent sur le déroulement de la carrière des individus: d'une part les études de contre-mobilité - où les trajectoires de carrière sont classifies selon qu'il y a ultimement retour au statut d'origine ou non - et d'autre part, les analyses causales du processus d'acquisition de statut qui permettent d'identifier les effets différés des variables d'origine. Les auteurs, après avoir montré que ces deux procédures reflètent une même réalité, tentent d'expliquer pourquoi certaines variables d'origine, tel le statut professionnel du père, ont une influence plus importante au milieu de la carrière alors que d'autres, telle l'éducation, ont un effet direct qui décroît avec le: temps. À ces fins ils introduisent une distinction entre biens inclusifs et biens exclusifs; chacun de ces types de biens, à cause de sa nature et des canaux de transmission entre générations qui lui est propre présente un profil caractéristique d'influence dans le temps.
