Abstract
How did the economy of Quebec fare during the formative years after Confederation in 1867? How did the Quebec economy fare prior to 1867? Did Quebec's economic standing deteriorate with Confederation? Did the economic initiatives developed by the federal government of the new nation have a negative impact upon Quebec's capacity for development relative to its partners in Confederation? Focusing upon the 1851-1931 period, my article addresses these questions, which remain central to contemporary discussions of Quebec's place in the Canadian Confederation. I employ available empirical work to place the Quebec economy within both a national and international context and to examine the effect of Confederation upon Quebec's economic development. The empirical evidence strongly suggests that Confederation served Quebec's economy well. Although, when Quebec entered Confederation, its economy lagged behind Ontario's, Quebec shared in and contributed to the emerging prosperity of the Canadian economy, which reached new heights during the wheat export boom of 1896-1913.
