Il y a eu un épisode pétainiste dans la vie de Paul Ricoeur. Combien de temps a-t-il duré exactement ? Il est vrai que le philosophe en a reconnu l'existence, lorsqu'en 1994 l'auteur de cet article lui a fait parvenir des textes publiés sous son nom au printemps 1941 dans une revue vichyssoise, l'{Unité Française} ; mais il est vrai aussi qu'il l'a présenté comme un bref épisode de désarroi ne durant que les premiers mois de sa captivité en Oflag. N'en a-t-il pas minimisé la longueur puisqu'il fut conférencier du "Cercle Pétain" de son camp de prisonniers et que ce cercle n'a commencé d'exister qu'en décembre 1941? A cette interrogation s'en joint une autre : la lecture attentive d'un article de Paul Ricoeur de mars 1939 – comme sa présence à l'université de Münich au cours de l'été 1939 ? – conduit à se demander quelle fut la nature de ce désarroi, bien antérieur donc à la défaite de juin 1940.
