Guy Poitevin, anthropologue et animateur social décédé en 2004, avait consacré une part de son activité à collecter et analyser les chants de meunerie des femmes intouchables du Maharashtra. Ses travaux ont une portée considérable du point de vue de l’élaboration du savoir dans les sciences sociales et de la compréhension des représentations sociales permettant aux « subalternes » d’appréhender le monde, de s’y reconstruire comme sujets et acteurs sociaux et, par conséquent, d’y intervenir pour le changer. Une partie de ces chants était consacrée à Ambedkar, dirigeant politique des intouchables et auteur de la constitution de l’Inde indépendante. Leur étude invite à reconsidérer la notion de charisme, telle qu’elle a été proposée par Max Weber. L’hypothèse sur laquelle les analyses de Guy Poitevin incitent, à réfléchir est que le charisme n’est pas une qualité innée du chef qui engendrerait l’obéissance, mais le résultat d’une relation particulière établie entre le dirigeant et ceux qui le soutiennent, relation dans laquelle les seconds confèrent le charisme au premier.
