En 1921, J.G. Frazer publie, chez Loeb, une édition et traduction anglaise de la Bibliothèque d'Apollodore. Quelles motivations poussent l'auteur du Golden Bough et le farouche défenseur d'une mythologie comparée de vaste ampleur à s'intéresser à une somme mythologique érudite, mais sans la moindre fantaisie comme celle qu'on place sous le nom d'Apollodore ? Telle est la problématique abordée à travers une étude du contexte de réalisation de cette traduction par Frazer et de sa réception immédiate. Il s'agit de comprendre quel regard Frazer a posé sur l'oeuvre et ce qu'il en a retiré pour ses propres conceptions du mythe et de sa fonction.
