Abstract
Co-operative Housing schemes and concepts are not new, they have been debated since the 18th century, however throughout history many different prototypes have been developed. Szymon and Helena Syrkus were influential architects of the Modern Movement in Poland who played a crucial role in the development of Polish co-operative housing estates. Their work within various organisations and their projects propagated and were examples of their concepts of functional, rational architecture for the masses. Standardised concrete slab buildings of duplicate units within landscaped courts are as familiar to the urban scene in Poland as are detached houses on a quarter-acre block in Australia. The result of the Syrkusrs influence forms the image of 20th century housing estates in Poland.n
