Abstract
En choisissant de fonder, en 1848, une succursale montréalaise de la Société de Saint-Vincent de Paul (SSVP), l’évêque de Montréal accordait par la même occasion un statut particulier à l’œuvre de charité laïque. Grâce à la réalisation d’un nombre considérable de visites à domicile, les laïcs ont été en mesure d’évaluer les besoins de plusieurs milliers d’enfants des familles pauvres. La SSVP est devenue un intermédiaire privilégié entre les familles et les institutions charitables. Notamment en ce qui concerne l’assistance à l’enfance, le contexte socio-religieux a fait en sorte que la succursale s’est vue confinée à jouer ce rôle d’intermédiaire. Pendant quelques décennies, la succursale a dû faire la sourde oreille au conseil général de Paris et se contenter de pratiquer un patronage des écoliers tronqué de sa dimension spirituelle. Comme elle a dû se retirer des instances directionnelles du premier patronage montréalais des apprentis. Paradoxalement, cela a permis d’accroître sensiblement l’importance du laïc au sein d’un réseau d’institutions charitables tenues principalement par les communautés religieuses. Au moins jusqu’aux premières décennies du XXe siècle, la SSVP constitue un rouage fondamental du réseau charitable catholique montréalais.
