Objetivos: sistematizar la informacion proveniente de articulos publicados en torno al sobrepeso, obesidad y diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en ninos y adolescentes de America Latina, entre los anos 2000 – 2010, y las estrategias de promocion de la salud implementadas. Metodos: estudio descriptivo, en el cual se reviso la bibliografia en revistas indexadas sobre estudios de sobrepeso, obesidad y diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en poblacion adolescente de America Latina y el Caribe desde el ano 2000 al 2010 y se recopilaron datos de estrategias de promocion de la salud que han desarrollado organizaciones gubernamentales y no gubernamentales sobre diabetes y obesidad. La busqueda de informacion se realizo en EBSCO, LILACS, BVS y Google Academico; las revistas consultadas fueron SciELO, ALAD, boletines OMS y OPS. Resultados: se encontraron 23 investigaciones, 16 se desarrollaron en diferentes paises y las 7 restantes se refieren a sistematizaciones de informacion de sobrepeso, obesidad y diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en adolescentes. Conclusiones: la totalidad de articulos revisados observan el aumento en la prevalencia de sobrepeso, obesidad y diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en poblaciones infantiles y adolescentes, la tendencia es mayor en el sexo femenino. Entre los factores de riesgo atribuibles a estos problemas de salud, se consideran los de tipo genetico, malos habitos alimentarios, poca practica de ejercicios fisicos y sedentarismo. Entre las estrategias de promocion de la salud desarrolladas en la decada en estudio, se observa que la planificacion de sus componentes son las propuestas en la carta de Ottawa.
