Abstract
Les sciences sociales manifestent un certain regain d’intérêt pour les classes moyennes, notamment dans les contextes où l’on considère que leur rôle est central dans certaines dynamiques urbaines (la gentrification, les enjeux liés au marché du logement ou encore la croissance des partis politiques de droite). Or, au Québec, et plus largement au Canada, les chercheurs ont négligé les classes moyennes en s’intéressant plutôt aux deux extrémités de la hiérarchie sociale. Cet article montre tout l’intérêt qu’il y a pourtant à se pencher sur celles-ci. Nous présentons ici des résultats d’une étude sur la cohabitation interethnique dans quatre quartiers de classes moyennes dans la région montréalaise. Nous basant sur une enquête de terrain qui a laissé émerger de façon spontanée les avis sur la diversité ethnoculturelle croissante des quartiers, nous montrons que, si les personnes interrogées ne savent pas exactement comment nommer cette diversité, elles entretiennent la plupart du temps des attitudes positives à son égard, bien qu’elles soient parfois accompagnées d’un certain inconfort.
