Abstract

Dans le processus d’invention de la Terreur et de légitimation du régime républicain du Directoire, la Convention thermidorienne érige la pédagogie en un impératif politique susceptible de stabiliser la République et de rendre impossible le retour des « Barbares ». Face aux impossibilités qu’elles rencontrent, cet impératif pédagogique se retourne rapidement contre les autorités du Directoire et s’impose comme un des éléments centraux des conflits politiques. Dès lors, la pédagogie constitue un espace ouvert à tous ceux qui cherchent à participer à l’œuvre de régénération de la société. L’analyse de la trajectoire d’un théoricien de la pédagogie, Joseph-Alexandre-Victor Dhupay, permet de mettre au jour les enjeux politiques, théoriques et institutionnels qui se cristallisent, tout au long du Directoire, autour de la figure du pédagogue. N’est pas pédagogue qui veut… et Dhupay est progressivement ravalé au rang d’utopiste.
