Cet article traite de la construction identitaire des étudiants originaires de milieux francophones minoritaires au Canada. Menée dans une perspective microsociologique, cette recherche est basée sur l’analyse de 21 entretiens biographiques auprès d’étudiants originaires de communautés francophones de la Saskatchewan, de l’Ontario et du Nouveau-Brunswick qui ont fait le choix de poursuivre des études universitaires à Québec. Les données ont été analysées sous l’angle de l’interactionnisme symbolique. Selon cette approche, l’identité est le produit des diverses interactions dont fait l’expérience un individu au cours de sa vie. Les résultats de l’analyse d’épisodes d’interaction montrent que le contact avec les Québécois conduit à une négociation qui amène ces étudiants à revoir l’intensité de certaines dimensions de leur identité préexistante ou à s’approprier de nouvelles facettes identitaires. L’expérience de la mobilité et du contact avec l’autre, différent de soi, conduit ainsi vers une conscience plus sensible des différences avec autrui et de sa propre identité.
