Abstract
Cet article passe en revue la récente historiographie de la religion dans la Grande-Bretagne contemporaine, en examinant le débat sur la sécularisation et notamment les travaux de Callum Brown, sans oublier Sarah Williams et Simon Green. Il adopte d’une façon générale le regard critique qu’ils portent, à l’image d’autres historiens des générations passées, sur l’existence d’un lien unilatéral et « inévitable » entre la modernisation et le déclin de la religion, mais les accuse successivement de minimiser le concept de « religion » dans l’époque contemporaine au point de lui avoir fait perdre cette subtilité qui le caractérise. Cet article entend plutôt démontrer que les signes du déclin de l’Église ne sont pas incompatibles avec la persistance de l’identité religieuse, même lorsque l’affiliation reste limitée.
