Abstract
RÉSUMÉ L’analyse des atours féminins des hommes dans le monde grec antique permet de réfléchir aux marqueurs de l’identité sexuée et de se demander à quoi répondent et renvoient les différentes formes de travestissement dans une société qui met en exergue les valeurs masculines. L’effémination et le travestissement travaillent essentiellement sur un registre visuel, reflet de normes culturelles. Pour un homme, le féminin est autre, aussi étranger que l’est Dionysos à Thèbes. Aussi, l’adoption d’habits de l’autre sexe est-elle de l’ordre de la transgression : transgression de l’identité sexuée et surtout détournement de l’identité sociale et politique qui présente un danger. Néanmoins, le travestissement d’adolescents dans un contexte initiatique est un opérateur de virilité ; leur beauté féminine (associée à la metis et à la séduction) est constitutive de leur identité. En revanche, le travestissement des adultes, même s’il est institutionnalisé, est critiqué, en particulier celui des hommes politiques. Ces derniers incarnent alors un pouvoir efféminé, travesti, aux marges et non conforme aux normes civiques.
